EAGER Program Nurtures Future Gardeners
Submitted by Donna Friedenreich and Danny Fowler
When Danny Fowler put out a call to volunteers to help 500 Pre-K children at Lucy Read Pre-Kindergarten Demonstration School plant bulbs, the response was amazing. Over 50 parents and a dozen volunteers—including Master Gardener interns and AAGC members—turned out to help these "eager" 4-year olds plant more than 2500 tulip bulbs!
The EAGER Program returned for the 3rd year to Lucy Read, for three days in late February. The volunteers helped the kids plant their very own species tulip bulbs in little pots so they can watch them grow in their classrooms. Once the tulips sprout their leaves, the kids transplant them into their school gardens, where they brighten the campus with their blossoms.
Sponsored by the Texas Flower Bulb Society as part of their mission to provide horticultural opportunities to school age children, the EAGER Program is doing its part to create future gardeners.
